Music Recommendations

Post by Chantal » Sat Mar 15, 2008 10:26 am

Ok, here's my attempt at getting some conversation going again! It's always good to check out some new music, so how about people recommend 10 bands/artists that other people aren't so likely to have heard of?

Here are mine, in no particular order:

1. Radio Luxembourg
2. Tough Love
3. The Pierces
4. The Drellas
5. The Hussys
6. Hawksley Workman
7. Dawn Kinnard
8. Bobs
9. Heypenny
10. Sibrydion
11. Bree Sharp
12. The Caves
13. Dust
14. Amy Wadge
15. Boy Cried Wolf
16. Soft Hearted Scientists
17. Y Ffyrc
18. Jill Sobule
19. Curerbell
20. The Afternoons

I know I said 10 rather than 20, but I couldn't actually reduce them to just 10! So er yeah, post as many as you want!! There seems to be a slight Welsh-band bias in mine, though that wasn't really intentional! I hope people listen to at least a few of them anyway as I think they're all great.

I look foward to have the time to listen to your recommended, Chantal. Thank you for taking the time to write.
The interview:
Suika: I think it's important for our band, any band, to have a message.
Interviewer: So, what is your message? What is the message of your band?
Suika: ...don't run with scissors?

I have recently been listening to

Black Lips
Cowtown
The Ghost Frequency
Grammatics
Itch
Laura Groves
Official Secrets Act
Tired Irie

You will have no doubt heard of much of them cos I am also listening to Status Quo and Sonic Youth at the moment. Hardly finger on the pulse.

However, I would recommend Itch with a massive rubber stamp, saw them the other week live, and they made me do that impressed chuckle thing I do when a band is great live.

Official Secrets Act are also superb.

PS Chantal - Hawksley Workman is brilliant. The singer from my band had the first dance at his wedding to a tune that starts "baby this night, this night is ours" and it is a proper good tune.

Thanks Seany - I shall check out your recommendations :)

Does anyone else use Soulseek by the way?

Cool! :D The song's called 'Baby This Night' infact! It's not one I've listened to that much for some reason, but I've just put it on now :)

Don't use soulseek no, I use the wonders of listening to other peoples conversations for finding new music.

Itch are seriously ace, dunno if you'll like The Ghost Frequency but Laura Groves will be a winner.

And Cowtown are a bit Devo on weirdness...so that I dunno as well.

Rest of them are fairly easy listening.

I've got the split 7" Cowtown did with Corinthians. The Corinthians side is better.
honey pie, i don't know when it started, just stop buying your albums from the supermarket. They only sell records that have charted.

Corinthians the rugby team???

Their album Pine Cone Express is excellent. And their live shows are good too.

The following artists have been entering my ears over recent weeks:

Half Man Half Biscuit
Silver Jews
Julian Cope
Faust
Jonathan Richman

Are these supposed to be new bands? Sorry.

I've never heard of any of the bands previously mentioned in this thread and I don't want to.

You should put a solo album out James, it'd be the best thing released in history I think

I'm on the sniff for more music recommendations as the well is running dry. Would appreciate top five albums of the moment.

To kick you off here's what I'm listening too right now mostly...

Conor Oberst - Conor Oberst
Jenny Lewis - Acid Tongue
Mono - Palmless prayer/Mass murder refrain
Black Crowes - Tall
Imelda May - Love tattoo

Favourite song of the moment has to be Conor Oberst's Cape Canaveral

I haven't bought many albums recently, sadly. I've got a few songs from Conor Oberst's though and really want to get that at some point. Top of my list to get at the mo is probably the new album by The Hot Puppies, as I love the first one, but money's a bit tight, as always! I did get Mark Morriss' solo album not long ago though and would recommend that.

Some songs I've been particularly into recently (some of which probably haven't been released but can be found through MySpace if nowhere else)...
How To Cure Dyslexia - Little Else
The Miserable Rich - Pisshead
Ben's Brother - God By Another Name
Bunky - Chuy
Operator Please - Just A Song About Ping Pong
The Afternoons - Dragons
