The Magic Theatre Thread

Post by Dan Pop »

hello... thought I'd start a thread relating to the Magic Theatre project (me and Sophie's new album).

We're now at the point of having 12 tracks chosen with the running order, but so far they have no lyrics, only a story for each song worked out, and there's only bits of music recorded here and there.

Hopefully we're looking at doing the first vocal recordings on Saturday so we'll see how that goes.

So now I can see how it's all going to sound... crackly, orchestral, poppy, optimistic, rich, colourful and finally tragic. Great tunes :-) I think 'You're too Beautiful' is pretty inkeeping with the overall sound.

It's all built around a story involving love and time travel, but the story will not be explicit in the songs... it's something happening in the background, leaving you to work out what's going on.

If it's anything like You're Too Beautiful it will be great - looking forward!

Sounds like another the genius we saw only before in "Hey Petrunko"

I look forward to this.
The interview:
Suika: I think it's important for our band, any band, to have a message.
Interviewer: So, what is your message? What is the message of your band?
Suika: ...don't run with scissors?

Bit of a "Somewhere in Time" vibe, then?

precisely so Stefan, precisely so.

Problem is... recording vocals was due to start today then I got a call from a German film maker wanting music for a documentary about Sperm Whales. So now I'm doing that instead of the Magic Theatre...

I've never understood, how do you approach something like that?
I mean, do documentaries on Sperm Wales inspire you at all?

I think the money does.

hello. No it's certainly not the money... £800 for a month's work won't make me rich.

What inspires me is a few things... first I've wanted to do an instrumental project about the sea for a while so this is a chance to try out those ideas. Second, there's a lot of nice underwater footage where they want a mystical, elegant vibe, sometimes sad, sometimes beautiful, and that appeals. Third, it's great practice at working to picture, new skills to master where you need to follow what's happening and tell an emotional story to the viewer's subconscious.

And fourth, I've got a London publisher to agree to take the music and try to place it on other TV programmes in the future.

So yeah it's the money. And the craft, and the challenge. And it's nice to be part of a team too. It's nice to be told off by Germans.

They were going to call the English version 'Sperm Ahoy!', but I persuaded them to call it The Sperm Whale Mystery.

:-)

Aside from trying to get other TV shows to use it, what else are you going to do with the music?

what will i do with it? I dunno. nothing, maybe. Let it sleep eternally on my hard drive and backup copies thereof. i'm probably not going to release another symphonika CD, it ending up costing too much money and time.

maybe i could give it away as a download or something

Yay! Shame the Symphonika CDs haven't been cost effective though.

mm, talking of cost effective, is there any way I can check to see if I've donated money or not after downloading things from your website?

Dan, I work for a youth charity in North London - I'm running a video project with the kids and we're making a film called Head Box. Is there any chance we could have use of any instrumental off cuts and unneeded tunes lying around on your harddrives please? You can see a trailer for the film here

Thanks in advance. Jeff

hi jeff,

unfortunately all the music I've ever done is under copyright to someone or other so I have nothing actually available.
